Ghazi Abdul Rahman Algosaibi was a Saudi Arabian liberal politician, technocrat, novelist, and Minister of Labour.
He was a well-known intellectual and a member the Al Gosaibi family.
A scion of one of the oldest trading families of the Al-Hasa and Bahrain, Algosaibi was considered among Saudi Arabia’s foremost technocrats since the mid 1970s.
Education
Algosaibi attended the University of Cairo and received his Law degree in 1961. Dr Algosaibi moved to the United States where he completed his MA in international relations from the University of Southern California in 1964 and obtained his PhD in Law from the University College London in 1970.
Career
Algosiabi’s positions and appointments included; associate professor, dean of the Faculty of Commerce and head of the department of political science at King Saud University; Director General of Saudi Railways Organization; cabinet portfolios in health, and industry and electricity; being instrumental in setting up Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC); chairman of Jubail Petrochemical Company (Sadaf) and Yanbu Petrochemical Company (Yanpet); served on Public Investment Fund, Supreme Manpower Council, and Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu; ambassador from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Bahrain from 1984 to 1992; ambassador to United Kingdom and Ireland 1992 to 2002; the Minister of Water from 2002 and the Minister of Labour from April, 2004 both until his death.
Death
Algosaibi died on August 15, 2010 (5 Ramadan 1431 H) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) in Riyadh after suffering from a prolonged illness.
